Record-breaking GCSE success for Hymers College students

Hymers College is celebrating its best ever year of GCSE results, with students excelling across all subject areas.

Outstanding results across the board reflect the hard work, determination and supportive ethos of our school.

A total of 30% of all grades are a 9 – the most common grade – and 50% of all grades are a 9 or 8 (equivalent to A*), representing a 6% increase on last year’s results.

Other highlights include:

  • 38% of all pupils achieved a clean sweep of 9-7 grades (A*-A equivalent)

  • Excellent 9-7 rates for English (74%), Maths (73%) and Science subjects (74%)

  • The average grade is 7.2 (higher than an A)

  • An average grade of an 8 in modern and classical languages – including Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Latin – with a 100% pass rate.

The majority of the class of 2025 are progressing to study A Levels at our Sixth Form.

George, 16, from Skidby, near Cottingham, secured ten GCSEs at grade 9.

He said: “It’s been great. I’ve got to know all my teachers really well over the years, and I feel like I’ve grown in a supportive environment.

“It has everything you could want – there’s music, drama, sport and more niche things like chess. I’ve really enjoyed my time here.

“I’m going to stay at Hymers’ Sixth Form because I believe it’s the most supportive environment and the best place for me.”

Kinga, 16, from South Cave, also achieved ten GCSEs at grade 9.

“I’ve really enjoyed all the extracurricular activities that are on offer here at Hymers, including the drama productions,” she said.

“The facilities are fantastic, such as all the music centre and the swimming pool.

“The teachers are also really nice and supportive, and have expertise in their fields.

“I’m now staying on at Hymers’ Sixth Form to do French, Latin and Biology. After that, I’m aiming for a Russell Group university – my dream would be Oxford.”

Oscar, 16, from Brough, is grateful for the supportive environment at our school after securing nine GCSEs, including a grade 8 in English Language and 7s in English Literature and PE.

Oscar, who is staying on at Sixth Form to study A Levels in Business, PE and either Economics or Psychology, said: “I’m severely dyslexic so I've had to work really hard, but that hard work has paid off.

“The support I’ve had at Hymers has been really good. All the staff have been really helpful and I wouldn't have got these results without them.”

Poppy, 16, from Walkington, near Beverley, secured ten GCSEs at grade 7 or above, including 9s in English Language, English Literature and Latin.

She is now looking forward to starting a Business Management apprenticeship with Art and Soul, on Humber Street, in Hull.

“I’ve loved it,” said Poppy.

“The school is great, the trips have been great, and I couldn’t have asked for more during my time at Hymers.

“There’s something for everyone here, and I’ll really miss it.

“I’m now going to do a Business Management apprenticeship with Art and Soul. I’d really like to run my own business one day, and I see this as the next step towards that.

“Hymers has definitely prepared me to go into the world of work.”

Hymers Headmaster, Justin Stanley, said: “Congratulations to all our students, from everyone at Hymers. To achieve the school’s best ever GCSE results is a truly remarkable achievement.

“It’s wonderful to see your great efforts rewarded with such an outstanding set of results.

“What’s most pleasing is to see each of you perform to the best of your ability and achieve the grades you so richly deserve, while exemplifying all the very best qualities of Hymers students – kindness, consideration, supportiveness, collaboration and ambition.

“Regardless of the pathway you’ve chosen, I’m optimistic you’ve laid firm foundations for future success.

“We look forward to welcoming back those of you who have chosen to stay on at the Hymers Sixth Form, and to seeing you thrive.

“To those who aren’t returning in September – stay in touch. You’ll always be part of the Hymers family.”
