Hymers Choral Concert at Hull Minster

Music

The Music department at Hymers is a dynamic and highly valued part of the school, with a long-established tradition of outstanding music-making. Housed in the state-of-the-art Stephen Martin Music School, our facilities include a chamber concert room, seven practice and teaching rooms, professional recording equipment, and a fully-equipped percussion suite.

We take great pride in our inclusive approach to music. Students are encouraged to join a wide variety of ensembles catering to all tastes and skill levels - from classical orchestras and chamber groups to choirs, rock bands, and jazz ensembles. Regular concerts, both in school and in the wider community, provide students with opportunities to perform, share their progress, and celebrate their achievements.

In addition to the curriculum, we offer individual tuition in a wide range of instruments and singing, with pupils from Reception able to take part. These lessons are delivered by a team of ten fantastic visiting teachers, providing over 270 lessons each week.

Supplementary classes in music theory and aural skills are available free of charge, and students may enter ABRSM examinations each term through the department.

Hocket training

Sport

Sport at Hymers is inclusive and varied. From traditional team sports like rugby, hockey, netball, and football to individual pursuits such as fencing, Pilates and dance, there’s something for every interest and ability. We believe in celebrating progress.

All pupils take part in physical education, with 100% engagement across the school and the majority representing Hymers in fixtures each year. Our broad and evolving programme is shaped by pupil voice, which has led to exciting developments like the launch of girls' football and rugby teams, and increased opportunities in activities such as water polo and zumba.

We regularly compete in local and national events, with recent highlights including winning the U15 ISFA National Cup, national titles in athletics and dance, and a gold medal for Great Britain in cycling. Many of our pupils also benefit from off-site training and support for sports like sailing, and triathlon.

With excellent facilities and long lunch breaks that allow for greater participation, our goal is to build confidence, foster teamwork, and inspire a lifelong love of sport in every pupil.

Drama

Drama at Hymers is a thriving and creative part of school life, giving students the chance to develop confidence, teamwork, and artistic expression. With regular school productions, drama clubs, and performance showcases, students of all ages can take to the stage and explore both classic and contemporary theatre.

Our pupils take part in performances from Pre-School and can continue all the way to Year 13 should they wish.

Our productions are inclusive and ambitious, ranging from large-scale musicals to student-led one-act plays.

Many students also participate in technical theatre, learning about lighting, sound, stage management, and costume design.

Hymers also supports students entering LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) examinations, helping them develop performance skills in acting, verse and prose, and public speaking.
