Music Lessons

The Music Department delivers almost 300 vocal and instrumental lessons every week.

We would like to encourage as many pupils as possible to learn a musical instrument as we have a large number of ensemble opportunities for musicians of all abilities. We can provide lessons for violin, recorder and trumpet for Reception - Year 2 pupils. In Year 2, pupils can also learn piano. From Year 3, pupils have access to the below:

  • Violin, Viola, ‘Cello, Double Bass

  • Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone

  • Trumpet, Cornet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn, Baritone, Euphonium, Tenor Horn

  • Percussion, Drum Kit

  • Guitar (acoustic, classical or electric), Bass Guitar, Ukelele

  • Singing

  • Piano

Our Visiting Music Teachers

Our Visiting Music Teachers are self-employed and therefore set their own lesson rates. Rates are liable to change on an annual basis, subject to a term’s notice.

Register Your Interest for Music Lessons

Applications for lessons on Oboe, Bassoon, French Horn, Trumpet, Euphonium and Double Bass are particularly welcome. Occasionally there may be a short waiting list for some instruments.

Whilst we welcome applications for shared lessons, it should be noted that these can only proceed if a request from another student of an appropriate age and standard has also requested a shared lesson on the same instrument, which can lead to an undetermined delay in the commencement of lessons.

Lesson Organisation

The lessons are organised on a rota basis and take place during the course of the school day.

We will assume that pupils will continue having lessons in the following academic year unless you inform us otherwise by the end of the Summer Term.

Initially, students are only allowed one instrument. From Year 4, students will be allowed to take up a second instrument, if desired, from the Spring Term onwards.

Obtaining an Instrument

With regard to obtaining an instrument, the school rents instruments to pupils on a termly basis, for £20 per term. If an instrument is not available, the Music Department can advise on local music shops’ hire schemes. Parents are advised to make sure that musical instruments are well insured.
