Awards Success
Hymers College has been awarded The Wellbeing Award for Schools and also a certificate of achievement to certify that we are an Asthma Friendly School.
Headmaster, Mr Justin Stanley commented,
“At the end of an extensive and rigorous accreditation process, and following a verification visit this week, we were delighted to receive news that Hymers has received the nationally recognised Wellbeing Award for Schools. On behalf of our pupils of all ages, a large number of staff have worked hard over a considerable period of time to develop a strategic approach that means that pupil and staff wellbeing underpins everything we do. The external accreditor met pupils, staff and governors and was highly complimentary about everything that he saw. Two of the many extremely positive statements to be found in his report are:
“College leaders have established a vision and ethos that promotes academic success, as well as physical and emotional well-being, for all members of the wider community. This is now being actively supported by staff at all levels and by students who are increasingly confident, articulate, and appreciative of the opportunities provided for them and are capitalising on an increasing range of opportunities both within and outside the classroom.”
“Students recognise and appreciate the importance of this level of staff commitment to wellbeing, which has made the school a better place. Students report feeling even better supported, partly by consolidating some of the more formalised structures, but also a general sense of opportunity, feeling safe, and opportunities to recognise and celebrate different aspects of personal development. As one student commented, ‘The support for students’ well-being is so much better than my previous school.’ Another added: ‘When we tell our friends from other schools about how staff help us, they find it a bit hard to believe and say, ‘that would never happen in our school’.”
Coming hot on the heels of our accreditation as an Asthma Friendly School, this award is fitting testament
to the conscientious and expert work that our pastoral and nursing staff do across the school. This also seems an appropriate point to celebrate the invaluable work of our school nurses, Mrs James and Mrs Picton. Pupils and staff alike know how fortunate we are to have them.”
