Chemistry Olympiad

The Royal Society of Chemistry's Olympiad Competition is an extremely testing written examination. Although this is primarily a Year 13 competition, this year in January thirteen students from both Years 12 and 13 took part. They answered questions about the chemistry of:

• sulfur compounds in the atmosphere,

• Olympic bronze medals,

• iodate salts,

• fuel-producing bacteria,

• MRI scan contrast agent gadopiclenol, (C35H54GdN7O15)

Takunda B, Samuel H, Atchuthan S and Lawrence S achieved Silver Certificates;
Samee A, Adwaya D, Riya G, Michael H, Parul K, Danish T, Siddharth T and Matthew W were awarded Bronze Certificates.

Muhammad H was placed in the top 50 of the 14,915 entrants nationally, attained one of the highest marks achieved by a Hymers student and only our 20th Gold Certificate.

For the first time, there have been Chemistry Challenges in each of Years 7 to 13 this year for the Alex Sutton Prize, and Muhammad is awarded this prize for Year 13.

The Chemistry Department is proud of the achievements of all these students, and particularly thrilled that Muhammad has achieved the recognition that his very keen interest in and aptitude for this particular intense academic activity so thoroughly deserves. A brilliant achievement!
