National Poetry Day

To celebrate National Poetry Day yesterday and the thrilling visit to Hymers by Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, some Year 8 students composed poems to commemorate the visit.

A Royal Visit

The screen glows, an intense stare,
I glare back,
Tedious hours pass, and at long last
the inevitable bell rings.
My feet take me out in the cold,
A strong breeze ripples the frosty air;
a strange yet familiar noise reaches my ears.
Blades whip round and round to support,
a vehicle coated in a warm burgundy hue.
A helicopter, neatly stood on the lush green grass,
children crowd the field,
taking out their phones to capture the moment,
frozen in an everlasting frame.
A figure walks by;
I bring a hand to my mouth as I realise who it is.
The princess.
I reach for my phone but
my hand slips away.
I want to live in the moment,
I take a deep breath and slip through the river of children,
reach the front,
and wave.
and then it hit me like foaming tsunami;
she waved back.
it must have been to somebody else.
It must have.
But I can’t help but smile
ever so slightly
at the thought that it was
to me
too.

Midday Thursday,
time for a parade,
as the helicopter arrives,
and out comes a surprise...

Catherine strides past,
The students want a pass,
as this is an opportunity
to meet the Princess of Wales shortly.

Waving politely,
shaking hands,
as the children excitedly,
had to listen to demands.

Kate’s now done her duty,
all the students look at her beauty,
as she walks back to the helicopter,
and excitement continues to mingle in the air...

The Royal Helicopter

You stand there solely,
You stand there awkwardly,
The tensions in the area rising,
The phones were held up high,
It was clear everybody picked royalty over food,
especially me and my friends.

Me and my friends ran hastily to the scene,
at the start of lunch.
The officer allowed us to hold her baton
we had lots of fun.
But little did we know in the middle of our conversation,
she would be awaiting in her car (very near).

The grey-stoned car swept across my face,
many were updating their Be-Reals.
I had my blazer across my head,
there was rain coming ahead.

There she stood, engaging in a conversation with Mr Stanley,
and there we were shouting viciously (clawing past everyone).
But my heart sank to the bottom of my body,
when she turned towards the opposite side.
We are stood awkwardly as she high-fived everyone else.,
it was disappointing.

When she returned to the helicopter,
I let out a sigh of dismay.

From the heavens,
Lifted on the wings of a helicopter,
Like a feather,
Floating down,
Down, down, down,

To earth,
A fallen angel.
The school is alive,
Buzzing like a bee,
Whispers of excitement,
Between teachers and pupils,
Looks of wonder filling faces,
Electric atmosphere.

The visit of Princess Kate

The excitement of the voices ran through my head,
My heart beating,
Loud echos of the helicopter rang through the building,
A jungle of people swarmed one by one.
The whispers of the pupil’s voices “10 more minutes”
filled the air with a burst of joy.
The flowers opened,
The plants grew,
The whole of Hull knew of the royal arrival.
The car pulled up,
Everyone ran,
The screams and shouts,
It was like a raging disease.
Who knew,
In a random school in Hull,
Would have such amazing memories,
From one visit that will be one to remember.

Kate Middleton

Kate came to school in her chopper,
The helicopter was clean and shiny like copper,
She stepped out and walked over elegantly,
The students watched hesitantly.
Kate walked over and we all froze,
She gave us high-fives and our hearts rose.
I saw everybody crowded so I ran over,
And I saw a helicopter parked next to a Range Rover,
On the helicopter was squeaky clean paint,
I saw Kate step out and we began to faint,
As she stepped out our smiles grew to our ears,
Then we began to cry happy tears.

Princess Kate Arrival!

P
rincess Kate visited today, it was an amazing experience.
Roars of excitement filled the air
Interested pupils crowded around.
No-one knew what was happening today!
Crowds spawned everywhere.
Everyone could not believe it was her, we were flabbergasted.
Special memories will stay with us forever.
Someday, we hope to meet her again.
