Academic enrichment

We aim to help pupils not only to excel in their exams, but also prepare them for a life-long love of learning.

Our curriculum is designed to prepare your child for life beyond school. It gives a comprehensive grounding in key subject areas such as; English, Mathematics and Science as well as the opportunity to discover Humanities, Sports, Music, Creative Arts, Technology and Modern Foreign Languages. Our curriculum also helps develop key learning skills, such as resourcefulness, resilience, reflectiveness and team work.

During his or her time at Hymers College, your child will have plenty of opportunity to stretch themselves beyond what they are taught in the classroom, and will be challenged to think and research widely. Not only is this hugely stimulating, it also benefits the work they do within the curriculum.

Throughout the year, we run a series of trips, ensuring our pupils have the freedom to learn outside the classroom. These trips are related to their subjects or interests, and range widely from a cultural trip to Normandy in the Junior School, to a Physics trip to Switzerland in the Sixth Form.

In the Junior School, we host a programme of in-school themed weeks, where students are encouraged to immerse themselves in a topic of their choice and to work collaboratively with one another. At the end of the week, we invite parents, staff and friends of Hymers to view the students’ hard work in the form of a presentation or exhibition.

We’ve recently introduced an ‘Enrichment Week’ programme into the school, in which all students are taken off their usual timetable to engage in a variety of activities. From comedy workshops and dance performances, to helping out in charity shops and clearing litter in the local community; these activities are not only fun, but insightful and educational. The week is extremely rewarding for our pupils, as it enables them to challenge themselves with new experiences and further develop positive relationships with their peers and members of staff.

Come along to our next Open Morning and discover how we can set your child up for life.
