Hymers host National Youth Dance Company

Last week, over half term, we had the pleasure of hosting the National Youth Dance Company’s (NYDC) third creative residency of the year. They spent their week working on creating a piece that will have its world premiere in April.

NYDC’s General Manager, Hannah Kirkpatrick, shed some light on what an average day looked like for the team throughout their week with us:

“A typical day for the company begins at 9:30am with a warm up and rehearsals that continues after lunch, we then break for dinner around 6:30pm after which everyone comes together in the evening for ‘Toolbox Sessions’ which range from learning about nutrition and self-care to bonding as a company to hearing from professionals in the industry.”

This is the Company’s third visit to Hymers College over the years. When asked why they continue to return to use our facilities, Hannah commented:

“Finding a suitable space is always one of our challenges. We have 38 dancers and need a space that is big enough for rehearsing a company of this size, along with additional rehearsal spaces, catering and accommodation nearby. Hymers is great for this.

It’s been lovely to return to a place that staff and a few of the returning dancers are familiar with. The staff at Hymers from caretakers to the catering team are so helpful and accommodating so it’s great to have space to just focus on being in the studio and working on the piece.”

It has been a great pleasure working with the National Youth Dance Company and we wish them the best of luck for the future.
