Marvellous Music Making
Music is an important part of daily life at Hymers; we encourage all pupils to fully participate in our timetabled and extra-curricular musical activities. With a fine reputation for performance and attention to the arts, our fantastic facilities are just one of the key strengths of a Hymers College education.
Built in 2014, the Stephen Martin Music School provides students with first-class music facilities, these include: music technology and teaching classrooms, a percussion suite, a band room and a state-of-the-art chamber concert room with ceiling microphones linking to our recording studio.
We also provide seven individual teaching and practice rooms with appropriate storage facilities for students’ instruments.
There are a large range of ensembles available, including: choirs, chamber groups, wind bands, brass groups, orchestras and school bands. With such an extensive music programme we encourage our pupils to take part in as many musical activities as possible.
We have 12 visiting teachers delivering over 400 lessons a week on strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar, piano and voice. We also offer additional classes in theory and aural preparation to help students progress through the ABRSM examinations, which are held for a week each term in school.
In addition, we organise frequent concerts and performances both in and outside school. This builds confidence amongst our students and gives them the opportunity to showcase their talents. All students are encouraged to develop their musical skills, passions and particular interests with the help of our dedicated music department who work tirelessly with our students to ensure they fulfil their musical potential.
