ABRSM at Hymers College

Hymers College offers our musically minded students the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument of their choice. We have 12 visiting music teachers delivering over 400 lessons a week on strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, guitar, piano and voice.

For those students who wish to improve and develop their skills more formally we arrange private termly visits for our students to be assessed by ABRSM (Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music) examiners.

Students, if they choose to, begin at Grade 1 learning the basics, before progressing through the grades as they become more competent and accomplished until reaching Grade 8.

Being the UK’s largest music education body, these nationally recognised ABRSM examinations provides students with a benchmark of the standard they should be working to and provides them with a real sense of achievement as they progress through the grades.

ABRSM is particularly useful for Sixth Formers applying to university as students receive additional UCAS points correlating to the musical grade they have attained; ensuring that their university applications are as strong as possible.
