Pupil wins national NHS Careers Competition

2nd May 2012

Varshita Narasah, a Year 9 pupil, was today announced as the Yorkshire and the Humber regional winner of the annual 'Step into the NHS schools’ competition.

Students were tasked with researching one of the 350 different career opportunities in the NHS and producing a job advertisement and either a job description or a CV of the ideal candidate for their chosen role. Over 1,250 students from across England entered the competition.

Varshita decided to look at the role of a Dramatherapist in the NHS. The judges were particularly impressed by her creativity and understanding of the role in developing a range of materials including an engaging leaflet and an interview with a patient who had received treatment from a Dramatherapist.

Varshita was presented with her prize of a £50 Amazon voucher by Ruth Baker, Dramatherapist at Humber NHS Foundation Trust, during a special presentation at the school on Tuesday 1st May.

Ruth commented:  “Young people are extremely important to the future of the NHS and it’s great to know that students are aware of the wide range of opportunities that exist. I’m delighted that the winner chose to research the role of a dramatherapist, as many people may not be aware what it actually involves and just how important and effective it can be to patient recovery.”

David Elstone, Headmaster at Hymers College said, “We are thrilled that one of our students has won this important prize. This competition has proven to be a valuable classroom tool, engaging students with the workings of the health service and the different career options available to them. The hard work and effort invested in this project reflects their commitment and dedication.”

Varshita said “I really enjoyed taking part in the competition. Thanks to the initial research we had to do into career options, I am now more aware of the wide variety of jobs available in the NHS. I knew I wanted to look at the role of dramatherapy as someone I know had treatment from a dramatherapist which really helped her deal with her problems.”
