HYMERS' FAMILY

David Elstone

Headmaster's Welcome
Welcome to the Hymers College website. I hope you will find the up to date information about us which you require; if there is more you would like to know, please contact us.

Hymers College offers a first class education. Results consistently show we are one of the highest achieving schools in the North East. In 2006, according to the DFeS, we were 19th in the country among independent schools based on UCAS points gained, and were the only school in the area in the top 50.

This year 46% of students taking A Levels gained a Grade A, and a total of 72% achieved A and B grades. No fewer than 36 pupils achieved 3 Grade A’s. Five students gained places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, including Jonathan Davies who gained an amazing six Grade As at A Level.

At GCSE 27% of the grades were at A*, and for the sixth consecutive year the school can boast over 60% of grades were at A* and A. The pass rate was 96%. But there is more to education than academic qualifications. We believe that a good education should inspire boys and girls to take every opportunity offered by a school to develop their talents. Hymers College is full of motivated, happy pupils who are doing just that.
We pride ourselves on the quality and breadth of the curriculum we provide whilst also developing the creative, sporting and personal skills of all our pupils. We are a school that welcomes progress in education but also cherishes traditional values.
Sharing with parents in the guiding and development of young lives is a privilege we value highly. I am confident that Hymers College can really make a difference to your child’s education and that we can give him or her the best possible start in life. - David Elstone

Our Teachers

Mr Ian Nicholls – Head of Lower School, teacher of Modern Languages
I have taught languages at Hymers for almost 22 years, and have been Head of Lower School for 18 years. During this time, I have watched more than three generations of pupils, including my own 3 children, move through the school and onwards into higher education and the world of work, and I have never ceased to be amazed at the talents and energy displayed by the pupils here, both inside the classroom and in the many other areas of school life. As a keen amateur sportsman myself, I have also had the opportunity to coach hundreds of young cricketers at school, and in subsequent years, play against some of them, or indeed alongside them, in the local leagues. Throughout my time as a teacher here, there has been a multitude of changes in every conceivable area, but the one unchanging factor has been the loyalty and friendship of the people I have been privileged to work alongside.

Mrs Helen Jackson, teacher of Biology
Hymers College is a friendly, welcoming community. Since joining in September 2001 I have found teaching here to be both challenging and rewarding. In my relatively short time in the biology department I have found pupils to be ambitious and enthusiastic about their learning. Lessons are fast-paced and with students full of ideas I have found a sound subject knowledge to be essential to deal with their many questions. I am constantly encouraged by their willingness to work hard.

Parents are an important part of the school community and as a form tutor I am the primary contact for them. I believe the relationships developed between the form tutor and the pupils to be very important and it is my role to support and advise the children in my care. I am keen to see the children develop holistically and feel that extra-curricular activities are an important part of school life. I have worked with girls’ hockey, netball and rounders teams, as well as the athletics squad. It is rewarding to see so many girls involved in sport, not only for their health but also because it enables me to see another side of their development, outside the laboratory.

Hymers’ Parents

Having two daughters at Hymers College I have always been impressed not only with the academic achievements but the extra-curricular activities which are actively encouraged from the Junior School to the day of leaving. This school does not stand still, it has a dynamic approach to buildings, not just replacing existing framework but adding new and exciting projects, whilst still retaining its important friendly atmosphere.
Mr Tim Mitchell

As a mother of two children at Hymers I have been very impressed by the fantastic enthusiasm that there is from the staff to enable the children to reach their potential across the board. I feel very strongly that one of the most valuable assets the children leave with is a tremendous self-confidence and self-belief. My involvement with my children’s education and the school generally has always been encouraged and welcomed. Good communication between parents and staff is seen as a priority by the school.
Mrs Debbie Adcock

Hymers’ Governors

There are 23 members of the Board of Governors drawn from a wide spread of academic, commercial and professional backgrounds. Many have current or former experience as Old Hymerians or parents. A number are nominated by organisations having a particular connection with the school, a number are co-opted by the Board, and there are 6 Senior Governors appointed for life. By agreement, Governors retire at the end of the academic year following their 75th birthday.

There are termly meetings of the Main Board and of the 3 principal standing committees, covering Academic matters, Property and Management, and Finance and General Purposes. The Academic Committee advises and supports the Headmaster and Senior Management Team as appropriate. The Property Committee takes responsibility for the maintenance and development of school land and buildings, whilst the Finance Committee is responsible for the financial and administrative wellbeing of the school.

The Bursar has day to day responsibility for all property and financial matters. In addition, there are a number of subsidiary committees and working parties at any one time, reporting on specific issues through the standing committees to the Board.

The Governors take the view that, in order to support the Headmaster in his task of providing an outstanding academic, cultural, pastoral and sporting education for the boys and girls of Hull and the East Riding, the school must be run as a well ordered and organised business, giving the best possible value for money.

The Charirman of the Governors is Mr Mike Roberts, he can be contacted C/O The Bursary.
