Courses
The department offers a full Physical Education and Games programme for Years
7 to 11. Each year group is allocated one lesson of Physical Education (45 minutes)
and three lessons of Games (two hours) per 6 day teaching cycle. Year 7 pupils
have one swimming lesson per cycle and others years take swimming as part of the
PE programme. A games option programme operates in Years 12 and 13.
PE lessons are taught in form groups. Games lessons are taught in
sets, according to ability.
Pupils are able to study GCSE Physical Education in Years 10 and 11. The course
is practically based. As well as performing and analysing practical activities,
the course teaches the relationship between factors affecting participation and
performance. Why people get involved in sport. The importance of active lifestyle
and exercise. How the body works in exercise and, through training, how performance
can be improved
AS and A2 Physical Education is offered in Years 12 and 13. The Course is designed
to:
- Develop knowledge and skills in selected areas.
- Explore contemporary sociological issues in modern sport.
- Examine effects of exercise and relationship between training and performance.
- Compare and contrast sport through different cultures.
- Enhance understanding of the role of technology or psychology in sporting
performance.
- Improve individual performance through greater understanding of the subject.
Extra-curricular
The extra-curricular programme is designed to support, contribute
to and complement the aims of the PE curriculum and thereby the
aims of the school.
Pupils are encouraged to develop positive attitudes and observe
sporting etiquette. Those representing the school in inter-school
fixtures are expected to uphold the highest standards of dress and
behaviour.
