| LATIN Mr D
McPherson - Head of Department
Hymers College
offers all of its pupils the chance to study Latin; a rare opportunity
these days. The benefits of this subject are many. It has been said
many times, and it remains true, that as understanding of Latin
increases so, too, does understanding of English. It also prepares
students for the study of many modern languages, such as French
and Spanish. Latin demands complexity of thought and encourages
academic rigour.
In addition, Latin is important because many of the most famous
and influential works of European literature were written in it.
That influence, far from declining with the passage of time, remains
as strong today as it has always done. The study of these works
greatly enriches pupils’ understanding of our own literary
heritage.
In Years 7, 8 and 9 the basic principles are taught using the Cambridge
Latin Course. This series of five books has been upgraded several
times, and now offers a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to
the subject. As well as the language element, the course introduces
pupils to Roman society, life and culture in an exciting and informative
way.
At the start of Year 10, pupils may choose to study Latin for GCSE.
The OCR specification uses real Roman authors, poets, historians,
politicians, etc. to provide first-hand insights into the world
of ancient Rome. There is also a substantial comprehension element
which further deepens pupils’ understanding of how the language
works.
A level students study the language and literature in much greater
detail. It is an excellent primer for a whole range of literature-based
degree courses, whilst complementing the sciences well.
Latin offers the chance to visit the many Roman towns, cities and
sites in England and abroad. There is still a wealth of material
available for direct study. The department regularly organises such
visits.
