All pupils study Geography in Years 7, 8 and
9 and take-up at GCSE and AS/A Level has been healthy for many years
now. Results in the public examinations are very good.
In years 7, 8 and 9 we provide a wide-ranging series of courses
that begin in the local area and fan out to different environments
and into a course of physical geography and hazards in Year 9. The
GCSE course studies both human and physical geography, stressing
the inter-relationships between the two. This theme is followed
through in the A Level course when data handling and essay writing
skills are developed.
The Department is located within three dedicated classrooms and
is right next to the ‘Humanities’ computer room, which
is equipped with 27 PCs, networked and with full internet access.
This superb facility guarantees students up-to-date information
in a subject that requires accurate knowledge about the world around
us.
Each classroom is equipped with blackout, VCR and OHP facilities and interactive whiteboard.
The Department owns a carousel slide projector and uses an interactive
whiteboard, which is proving invaluable in such an image-rich subject.
Field Work is a major part of the department’s life, with
only Year 8 not getting off the site at some time in the year. The
GCSE group goes on a residential weekend on the Yorkshire Wolds
and the Lower Sixth (Year 12) spends a week studying glaciers and
tourism in the Swiss Alps. This latter trip generates some awesome
views and much successful bonding between our students and the school
we share the trip with – Hull High School in the past and,
currently, Lincoln Minster School. Visit www.zermatt.ch
to see why we go there!
A trip to see the wonders of Iceland goes off in July 2008 for students in Years 9 to 12.
We have entered the geographical association
Worldwise Quiz for many years (with considerable success) and have
hosted the local and regional round for the last few years.
