Introduction

Welcome to the Junior School section of the Hymers College website. Choosing the right school for your child is such an important decision and I hope you find the pages included here helpful. I would, however, urge you to visit the school and talk to me, the staff and pupils as there is no better way to gauge the atmosphere of a school. I am confident that you will be impressed by what you see and hear.
Visitors to the Junior School invariably comment on the positive learning environment, the manners and confidence of the pupils and the first class facilities; in short, it is a very happy place where children develop as learners and well-balanced individuals.

Following our last inspection in 2008, the report stated:
‘The junior school offers highly effective support in all aspects of pupils’ development and teachers know the pupils very well. The junior school’s ‘open door’ policy for parents means that information about a pupil is easily and fruitfully shared between home and school, enabling teachers to give an excellent level of care. The widespread participation by teachers in extra-curricular activities enables them to appreciate pupils’ wider interests and talents. Pupils say they feel secure and that teachers ‘really care’ about them.’     ISI Feb 2008

The curriculum is designed to provide a thorough grounding in the basic skills which are required throughout education, along with a broad range of subjects which interest and challenge the children for academic success in future years.

The Junior School currently has 208 pupils in Year 4 to Year 6, comprising three classes in each year group. Most children join at the start of Year 4, although we also have an entry point at Year 5. If sound progress has been made in the Junior School, it is expected that pupils will proceed into the Senior School, for which an entrance examination is taken in the February of Year 6. The transition is very smooth and as pupils move up the school to the Sixth Form, many still cherish the friendships made at the age of eight in the Junior School.

If you would like to arrange to visit the Junior School, please call Mrs Dyson in the School Office on (01482) 441211 or email ndyson@hymers.org.
