SUBJECTS » Music
Hymers has a fine reputation for its music, achieving exceptionally high standards. The Music Department provides opportunities for all members of the school to develop music skills, knowledge and understanding. Performing opportunities are available to all pupils.
In addition to its place in the academic curriculum, extra-curricular music is strongly encouraged at Hymers with a vast range of options to choose from. There are many opportunities to take part in choirs and instrumental ensembles of various sizes and at all levels of age and ability. There are frequent performances in and out of school.
Pupils have the opportunity to meet and work with some of the finest musicians who visit the school to give recitals or hold master-classes.
Years 7 to 9
Music is taught as a class subject to all pupils. Emphasis is placed upon developing the practical aspects of the subject and this is viewed as preparation for the GCSE.
As well as good singing being encouraged and some basic theory being taught, the pupils have the opportunity to learn to play and compose using a wide range of electronic and traditional classroom instruments.
Years 10 and 11
Pupils may choose to study Music for GCSE and are prepared for the Listening, Performing and Composition elements of the OCR examination.
Years 12 and 13
From the options offered on the OCR specification students choose an A level course best suited to their needs and abilities.
